UJ How to Apply online
In order to apply to the University of Johannesburg, you will need the following:
- Final School leaving results when applying with international credentials or currently in Grade 12 (Final Grade 11 results)
- Valid South African ID, Birth Certificate or Passport
- Sworn English Translation of documents (Documents issued in any Language other than English)
- Provide proof of the English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of learning and teaching (the University prefers the applicant to take the IELTS at an overall score of 6 and TOEFL at an average score of 80–104 for Undergraduate programmes) Alternatively, you may elect to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP).
- Should you choose to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP), Mr Malibongwe Masango will be the contact person for UJELP. Mr Masango is contactable on +27 (0) 11 559 4265 or mmasango@uj.ac.za
- Applicants who are attending or have attended a University within or outside the Republic of South Africa, must submit an academic transcript that covers the period of study, especially if they intend on being granted exemption from modules or courses at University.
Applicants may apply online or they may make use of the hard copy UJ Application form.
While online applications are free for applicants, those who complete the hard copy of the application form will have to pay a non-refundable application fee of R200.
All supporting documents may be uploaded on the application platform or emailed to intappsdocs@listsrv.uj.ac.za.
Students who will need campus accommodation must submit a completed residence application form at the same time that they apply to study at UJ.

UJ Accommodation
- For first time applicants, first complete the academic application process and use your student/reference number to complete the residence application as indicated below.
- Once you have been academically admitted at the University in January 2023 and your received a letter of confirmation of placement in residence, you will be required to pay a residence deposit of R1220.00
- Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the residences (depending on space availability)
- You may reside only on the campus where you attend your studies.
- No residence transfers are allowed.
- Only applicants studying towards FULL TIME curricular undergraduate and postgraduate programmes may apply for residence
- Residence online application is not available for 1st Time Entering Students 24 years and older. You can download a hardcopy application form at the bottom of this page.
This application form is ONLY for (1st Time Entering Students) students who NEVER studied before and NOT for students who are already registered students at UJ.

- Step 1 | Enter your student number and pin to login.
- Step 2 | When you are logged in, expand the ‘Student Web Systems’ folder
- Step 3 | Expand the ‘Application Process’ folder
- Step 4 | Click on the ‘Application Process’ folder on the left hand side
- Step 5 | Click on the ‘Add New Residence Application’ button:
- Step 6 | Complete the highlighted fields and then click on the ‘Proceed With Application’ button:
- Step 7 | Click on the “New Record’ button to submit your application
